United Imaging Healthcare is changing the game – see how uAIFI QScan technology transforms noisy MRI scans into a comfortable experience

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered the gold standard in soft tissue imaging, neurology, and oncology. However, for many patients, this procedure is associated with one dominant sensation: overwhelming noise. The sounds generated by gradient coils, often exceeding 100 decibels, are a source of anxiety, discomfort, and, in the case of children, the need for sedation.

Until recently, quiet scanning came with compromises – noise reduction meant longer scan times or poorer image quality. United Imaging Healthcare (UIH) is breaking this old paradigm. With the introduction of uAIFI QScan technology, supported by advanced artificial intelligence, the company is proving that silence during MR examinations can go hand in hand with the highest precision.

Why is MRI noisy?

To understand the significance of the innovation introduced by United Imaging Healthcare, it is worth recalling the source of the problem. Noise in MRI is caused by rapid current switching in gradient coils, which are located in a strong magnetic field. Lorentz forces cause the coils to vibrate, generating a characteristic loud knocking sound.

Traditional silencing methods involved softening these switches, but this inevitably slowed down data acquisition or resulted in the loss of anatomical details.

uAIFI QScan – silence without compromise

United Imaging’s solution, implemented in the revolutionary uMR Omega™ system, among others, is uAIFI QScan. This is not just a “silent mode” familiar from older generation devices. It is a comprehensive engineering solution based on the uAIFI (United Imaging AI for Imaging) platform.

The key distinguishing feature of this technology is the slogan: “Quiet scanning is achieved without compromise.” This means that radiologists no longer have to choose between patient comfort and accuracy of results.

How does it work? The synergy of ACS and DeepRecon

The secret to the effectiveness of uAIFI QScan lies in the combination of two powerful AI-based technologies:

  • uAIFI ACS (AI-assisted Compressed Sensing): This is United Imaging’s proprietary imaging acceleration technology. ACS combines traditional methods (Compressed Sensing, Half Fourier, Parallel Imaging) with deep learning neural networks introduced in the image reconstruction process. Thanks to ACS, the system is able to reconstruct a full-value image from less raw data. This allows the use of sequences that generate less noise, and the missing information is “filled in” by intelligent algorithms with unprecedented precision.
  • DeepRecon: This technology is responsible for noise reduction and image sharpening during reconstruction. Working in conjunction with ACS, DeepRecon delivers crystal-clear images even with scanning parameters optimized for quiet operation.

Quiet whole-body scanning is a clinical breakthrough

Previous “quiet scan” solutions were often limited to selected sequences (mainly orthopedic or neurological). United Imaging is making a breakthrough by introducing “Whole-body Quiet Scanning into Clinical Routine.”

Thanks to uAIFI QScan, it is possible to perform a quiet examination:

  • Abdominal cavity,
  • Pelvis,
  • Chest,
  • Entire spine.

This change is of fundamental importance for oncology patients who undergo regular whole-body MRI scans.

Benefits for patients and medical facilities

The implementation of uAIFI QScan technology brings measurable benefits in three areas:

Patient comfort

Noise reduction drastically reduces stress levels. Patients feel safer, which is particularly important in the case of:

  • Children (Pediatrics): Less noise means a better chance of performing the examination without the need for anesthesia or sedation.
  • Elderly people: Seniors often have difficulty tolerating aggressive sounds, which can lead to increased blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Patients with autism or sensory hypersensitivity.

Image quality and reduction of repeats

A calm patient is a patient who does not move. Noise elimination, combined with systems such as Motion Freezing, significantly reduces motion artifacts. As a result, the radiologist receives a sharp image on the first attempt, eliminating the need for sequence recalls.

Performance

Thanks to uAIFI ACS, quiet scanning does not mean slow scanning. UIH systems can achieve acquisition speeds similar to CT (“Up to CT-like Scanning Speed”), which allows for increased throughput while maintaining a high standard of patient care.

Summary

United Imaging Healthcare’s uAIFI QScan technology proves that medical advancement in the 21st century is not just about competing on tesla or gradients. True innovation is about using the most powerful tools—such as artificial intelligence and deep learning—to restore the human dimension to medical procedures. By turning deafening noise into silence, UIH makes MRI scanning an accessible and comfortable experience for everyone.
