When a Stuffy Nose Isn’t Just a Cold: Chronic Sinusitis and When to See an ENT Clinic in Singapore

Most of us know the feeling of a blocked, runny nose during a cold. It is annoying, but it usually clears within a week or two. So what happens when the congestion never really goes away?

For many people in Singapore, a stuffy nose that drags on for weeks or keeps coming back is not a stubborn cold at all. It may be chronic sinusitis, a long-term inflammation of the sinuses that often needs proper assessment at an ENT clinic in Singapore.

This guide explains how to tell the two apart, why our tropical climate makes sinus problems so common, and when ongoing symptoms are worth investigating with a specialist.

When a Stuffy Nose Isn’t Just a Cold

What is chronic sinusitis?

The sinuses are air-filled spaces behind your forehead, cheeks and nose. When the lining of these spaces becomes inflamed and swollen, mucus cannot drain properly. Doctors call this rhinosinusitis, though most people simply know it as sinusitis.

Sinusitis is described as chronic when symptoms last for 12 weeks or longer, even with some treatment. A common cold, by contrast, is a short viral infection that usually settles on its own.

Cold or chronic sinusitis?

The two can feel similar at first, which is why sinusitis is so often mistaken for one cold after another. The table below shows the main differences.

Feature

Chronic sinusitis

About 7 to 10 days

12 weeks or longer

Thick, sometimes discoloured

Facial pain or pressure

Mild and brief

How Singapore’s Climate Fuels Chronic Sinusitis

Singapore’s warm, humid weather suits many things, including the allergens that irritate our noses.

Humidity and house dust mites

House dust mites thrive in warm conditions where humidity stays above 50 percent, which describes most homes here. According to Singapore’s Agency for Care Effectiveness, more than 80 percent of the local population is sensitised to house dust mites, with Blomia tropicalis being an allergen especially common in the tropics.

Because these allergens are present all year round, allergic rhinitis (an allergy-driven inflammation of the nose) tends to be perennial here rather than seasonal. Constant nasal inflammation can set the stage for, or worsen, chronic sinus problems.

Haze, dust and air quality

Periodic haze, traffic fumes and indoor dust add further irritation to already sensitive nasal passages. For people prone to sinus inflammation, these triggers can turn an occasional blocked nose into a recurring problem.

Symptoms That Deserve Attention

A short bout of congestion is rarely a concern. Persistent or recurring symptoms are a different matter. Common signs of chronic sinusitis include:

  • Nasal congestion or blockage that does not fully clear
  • Thick nasal discharge, or mucus that drips down the back of the throat (post-nasal drip)
  • Facial pain, pressure or fullness around the eyes, cheeks or forehead
  • A reduced or absent sense of smell and taste
  • Headaches, bad breath or a lingering cough that worsens at night
  • Tiredness from disturbed sleep and constant mouth breathing

If several of these signs persist for more than a couple of weeks, they may be among the symptoms that warrant seeing an ENT specialist. A specialist assessment can confirm whether chronic sinusitis or another condition is the cause.

When to See an Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist in Singapore

Most colds and mild sinus infections can be managed at home or with a visit to a GP. You may wish to consider an ENT consultation when:

  • Symptoms last more than 10 days without improvement, or keep returning
  • Over-the-counter remedies and GP treatment are not helping
  • You have facial pain, repeated infections or a lasting loss of smell
  • Symptoms disrupt your sleep, work or daily life

Seeing an ear, nose and throat specialist matters because the underlying cause is not always obvious. Nasal polyps, a deviated septum, allergies and infection can all produce similar symptoms but need different treatment.

In a warm, humid climate like Singapore’s, a blocked nose that never fully clears is one of the more common reasons people seek an ENT assessment. Because several different conditions can produce similar symptoms, an accurate diagnosis is what guides the right treatment.

How Chronic Sinusitis Is Diagnosed and Treated

Getting an accurate diagnosis

An ENT specialist starts with your symptom history and a physical examination. Two tools are especially useful:

  • Nasal endoscopy: a thin, flexible camera passed gently into the nose to view the nasal passages and sinus openings. In Singapore, this procedure is typically Medisave-claimable.
  • CT scan: a detailed image of the sinuses that shows how much inflammation or blockage is present, and helps plan treatment if surgery is being considered.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the cause and severity. Many patients improve with medication alone, while others benefit from a minor procedure. Options include:

  • Saline rinses and nasal steroid sprays to reduce inflammation
  • Allergy treatment, such as antihistamines or immunotherapy, where dust mite allergy is involved
  • A course of antibiotics if a bacterial infection is present
  • Minimally invasive endoscopic sinus surgery for cases that do not respond to medication, or where polyps or physical blockages prevent normal drainage

How much does it cost to see an ENT specialist in Singapore?

Costs vary with the clinic, the nature of the visit, and whether care is in a public or private setting. Treatment for sinus problems can be as simple as medication or may involve procedures or surgery, with costs increasing according to complexity.

Singaporeans and Permanent Residents can often use Medisave for approved procedures, and many private insurance plans help cover specialist care. Clinic staff can usually advise on Medisave use and insurance claims before treatment.

How much does an ENT consultation cost?

The consultation fee is usually charged separately from any tests or procedures, and it is often based on the length and complexity of the visit. A longer first consultation may therefore cost more than a brief follow-up.

It is reasonable to ask about fees when booking and to check what is included, so the exact cost is clear before your appointment. Clinic staff can confirm the consultation fee and any expected charges in advance.

How to choose an ENT specialist in Singapore

There is no official ranking of ENT specialists in Singapore, and Singapore Medical Council guidelines discourage doctors from making self-promotional or comparative claims about their standing. A more useful question is which specialist is the right fit for your condition.

When choosing a private ENT specialist in Singapore, it helps to consider:

  • Accreditation and qualifications recognised in Singapore
  • Relevant subspecialty experience (for sinus issues, a focus in rhinology, the branch of ENT dealing with the nose and sinuses)
  • Access to proper diagnostics such as endoscopy and imaging
  • Clear communication and a treatment approach you feel comfortable with

For chronic sinusitis specifically, a specialist with rhinology training is well placed to assess complex nasal and sinus conditions.

Should you travel overseas for ENT care?

Many countries have well-trained ENT surgeons, so no single country holds the answer. What matters more is the standard of training, accreditation and access to modern diagnostics.

Singapore has a high standard of specialist medical care, with ENT specialists who complete rigorous local training and, in many cases, further subspecialty fellowships abroad. For most people, choosing a qualified, well-matched specialist close to home is more practical than travelling overseas.

The Bottom Line

A stuffy nose is easy to dismiss, especially when colds are so common. But when congestion lingers for weeks, returns again and again, or starts to affect your sleep, it is worth asking a different question: is this really just a cold?

In Singapore’s humid, allergen-rich climate, chronic sinusitis is more common than many realise, and it can be managed effectively once correctly diagnosed. Persistent or recurring nasal symptoms can have several different causes, and an accurate diagnosis is what guides effective treatment.
