Support animals have become vital to individuals struggling with emotional challenges. These animals help with companionship, alleviating feelings of loneliness or sadness. Although emotional support animals, or ESAs, are often mentioned alongside service animals, they do not require specialized training.

However, owning one demands proper documentation to be recognized under the law. If you are considering getting an ESA to help alleviate symptoms of mental problems, keep reading to learn how to qualify and settle on a well-informed decision.

Understand Why You Need an ESA

The first step to be eligible for a support animal is understanding why you need one. ESAs are meant to reduce symptoms of mental health conditions. These include depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. They are also categorized as companion pets that eliminate loneliness. However, they are not considered service animals under the  Americans with Disability Act.

Before getting a companion, you need to ask yourself if the challenges significantly affect your daily life. Next, determine if the presence of the animal will reduce the symptoms of the mental condition.

Understanding these two vital aspects will assist you in determining if getting an ESA is the right choice. When applying, your doctor will also ask you if you noticed any improvements in your mental well-being when spending time around animals.

If pets have helped you live a mentally healthier life, getting an ESA would be a wise course.

Consult a Legal Mental Doctor

After knowing your issue, you should obtain an official recommendation from a licensed psychologist or therapist. This recommendation comes in the form of a therapy letter suggesting the use of an animal as part of a treatment plan. The letter must also be printed on the doctor’s letterhead and include their licensing information, signature, and date.

Obtaining the letter can be straightforward or complicated, depending on the service provider you choose and state laws. Fortunately,  you can get it faster if you work with experienced mental doctors. For example, you can obtain your Wellness Wag support animal letter online within a day if you schedule an appointment with the licensed doctor and explain your reasons.

Choose the Right ESA for You

Choosing the right animal to provide support requires careful consideration. While cats and dogs are the most popular choices, any domesticated animal can qualify as an ESA.

However, before settling on one, you should consider its temperament. Look at how the animal responds to triggers such as feeling mistreated, unsafe, or unwell.

Your lifestyle can also help you choose the right support animal. For example, smaller pets like cats and birds are best for apartment living. On the other hand, larger pets like dogs may require a larger space and regular outdoor exercise. Once you have selected your animal, it is wise to spend time with it to strengthen the bond. This reduces stress and allows the animal to fulfill its purpose.

Endnote

Companion animals have turned into more than just pets. They have become a source of emotional support that makes a meaningful difference in managing mental issues. However, before qualifying for an ESA, you must understand your mental health needs and have a comprehensive assessment from a licensed medical practitioner.
