Key Takeaways:

  • 70% of women reported increased desire, orgasm, and pleasure when using cannabis.
  • Frequent cannabis users reported experiencing lower levels of pain during sex.
  • Cannabis reduces anxiety and helps partners feel closer and more satisfying intimacy.

Cannabis and Women’s Use

Marijuana, also known as cannabis or weed, describes the dried flowers, leaves, stems, and seeds of the cannabis plant. The plant contains over 100 compounds, or cannabinoids. Among these are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which alters the mind, and other active compounds like cannabidiol (CBD). CBD does not induce a “high.”

Cannabinoids offer more than just recreational use. Many women are using cannabis for its therapeutic benefits.

A survey by The Harris Poll, commissioned by cannabis retailer MedMen Enterprises, found that over one-third of American women aged 21 and above use cannabis. The survey (February 28 to March 2, 2023) included 1,020 women aged 21 and older. It revealed that 37% of American women use cannabis, with more than one in four using it at least once a month.

Sexual Functioning and Satisfaction – Journal of Cannabis Research

Researchers speculate that cannabis might enhance sex by reducing anxiety. Reducing anxiety during sexual encounters could enhance experiences, which results in higher satisfaction, orgasm, and desire.

THC’s effect on altering the perception of time may prolong feelings of sexual pleasure. The cannabinoid receptor CB1 plays a role in female sexual function, which suggests that activating CB1 could enhance sexual function.

A survey in the Journal of Cannabis Research found that cannabis increases sexual desire and orgasm intensity. Participants also claimed an enhanced ability to have multiple orgasms per sexual encounter.

Methodology

The study included questions about various aspects of cannabis use. These covered the intentionality behind its use, perceived benefits, sources of acquisition, forms consumed (such as flower or wax), and the frequency and duration of use.

Half of the participants reported using weed daily for both recreational and medicinal purposes, and many intentionally used it before engaging in sex. The majority of participants have been using cannabis for at least a few years. Almost all participants indicated that they use cannabis in the form of flowers.

Results

Most participants were identified as female, White/Caucasian, and college-educated. Almost 25% identified as LGBTQIA+. Most reported being in a monogamous sexual relationship. Researchers stated that age and gender had significant effects on cannabis use, sexual functioning, or satisfaction.

Over 70% of participants reported increased desire and orgasm intensity. Those who reported masturbating noted that cannabis enhanced their pleasure. Participants also stated that cannabis heightened their sense of taste and touch.

Cannabis Use and Decrease Sexual Dysfunction – Journal of Sexual Medicine

A study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine analyzed online survey results from 452 women. Researchers asked the participants about their cannabis use and had each complete the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) survey. The FSFI scores six specific domains: desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain.

Image3

By comparing the frequency of cannabis use with each participant’s FSFI score, women who used cannabis more frequently had lower rates of sexual dysfunction. The odds of reporting female sexual dysfunction declined by 21%.

Women who used cannabis more frequently generally had higher FSFI scores, which indicates better sexual experiences overall. These women also had higher scores in specific FSFI subdomains, such as greater arousal and better orgasms.

There also was a weak relationship indicating that frequent cannabis users reported lower levels of pain related to sex.

Importance of Improved Sexual Experience in a Relationship

Fosters Intimacy

A decline in sexual activity often leads to a decrease in physical intimacy. This lack of intimacy can negatively impact other aspects of your relationship, such as communication and trust. Frequent sex leads to a sense of well-being.

Deepens Bonds

It’s a vulnerable and intimate act that strengthens physical and emotional connections. Being physically close during sex fosters a deeper emotional bond with your partner and enhances your relationship on multiple levels.

Builds Trust and Respect

Sharing such an intimate experience involves trusting each other with your bodies and strengthening your relationship’s trust and respect. Frequent sexual activity can fortify these aspects, along with many others, that contribute to a stronger partnership.

Tips for Using Cannabis to Enhance Sexual Experiences

  1. Begin with a low dosage of cannabis to gauge its effects on your body, and gradually increase if needed.
  2. Experiment with different strains of cannabis to find one that enhances relaxation and arousal without causing anxiety or impairment.
  3. Allow enough time for the effects of cannabis to occur before engaging in sexual activity.
  4. Create a comfortable and intimate environment to enhance the sensual experience.
  5. Discuss your partner to ensure you’re both on the same page.
  6. Pay attention to how cannabis enhances sensation and pleasure during sexual activity.
  7. Explore different methods of consuming cannabis, such as smoking, vaping, or edibles, to find what works best for you.
  8. Combine cannabis with other sexual enhancement methods or products, such as lubricants or massage oils, for added pleasure.
  9. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  10. Be mindful of your dosage and avoid consuming too much cannabis, as it may induce sleepiness.

Are there Any Age-related Factors Women Should Consider when Using Cannabis for Sexual Enhancement?

  • Hormonal Changes. Women may experience changes in hormonal levels as they age, which can affect how their bodies respond to cannabis and sexual stimuli.
  • Health Conditions. Older women may have pre-existing health conditions or medications that interact with cannabis, so consult with a healthcare provider before using cannabis for sexual enhancement.
