Surgical Robotics: How Robot Technology Is Shaping The Future of Medical Surgery

Modern healthcare is steadily evolving as more surgeons are using robotics to perform complex procedures. According to recent data, robotic surgeries accounted for 2.63 million procedures in the US in 2024, which is a nearly 20 percent increase from the year before. Within a short time frame, the advancements in medical robotics technology has enabled surgeons to navigate tight spaces and work on difficult-to-reach areas of the body, reducing errors and complications and allowing for faster recoveries.

Operations that involve the use of surgical robotics have changed many lives as these have improved people’s health and overall mobility. Here’s how robot technology is enhancing surgical control, safety, and precision in hospitals worldwide.

Improved Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery is one of the most common procedures performed by surgeons all over the world as it is often recommended for people with severe osteoarthritis and knee damage. This treatment typically involves attaching an artificial joint to the patient’s bone with surgical cement. While the cement helps to make the implant more stable, it can break down over time and loosen the artificial joint. That’s why most experts believe that cementless knee surgery is better since it allows the bone to grow naturally around the area to create more stability.

Earlier this year, one surgeon based in India took this treatment to the next level by using surgical robotics, and the procedure was so successful that the patient reportedly took his first steps on the same day right after the surgery. In June 2025, the world’s first robot-assisted cementless knee replacement surgery was performed in Delhi, and implants made of titanium were used to replace the damaged joints. Titanium metal is a preferred material in surgery since it is biocompatible, non-corrosive, and nonmagnetic, making it ideal for medical use. With the help of a surgery robot, Dr. Sujoy Bhattacharjee and his team were able to place the implant securely without using cement, and the technique provided the patient with a more natural joint movement and enhanced healing. “He was barely able to walk before surgery,” Dr. Bhattacharjee explains. “But on the day of the operation itself, he managed to walk with assistance.”

Safer Spinal Fusion Surgery

Spinal fusion surgery is a difficult and delicate medical procedure as it involves extensive bone work, complex placement of hardware in the spine, and long operating times. It carries a high risk of complications, that’s why it takes a team of around 10 to 15 medical professionals to ensure the operation’s success. But after the Mater Private Hospital set up a robotic spine program in Ireland, robot-assisted spine surgeries have started to become the standard of care in the country.

According to Professor Joseph Butler, clinical lead of the hospital’s National Spinal Injuries Unit, using robot technology during spine procedures allows significantly smaller incisions, reduces blood loss, and leads to less pain post-surgery. It also results in faster recovery so patients can get back to their regular routine in a shorter amount of time. “Patients are doing activities anywhere between two to six weeks, which is way ahead of the standard expectations,” said Professor Butler.

Robot technology is increasingly being utilized by surgeons all over the world to make procedures safer, quicker, and more effective. Surgical robotics offer a bright future for the medical industry, and a better quality of life for patients who want a healthier and more active lifestyle.
